There have been a lot of things uncovered about Colin Kaepernick's life. Whether it was the reason behind kneeling during the national anthem or why squads have not picked him up after the 2017 season, there have always been answers surrounding his professional life. However, his personal life is also fairly tough too. Why was this the case and how did he get over these challenges? We'll tell you the story in this article.
Early Life
Colin Kaepernick did not grow up in a normal African-American household. Instead, he was adopted at a young age by Rick and Teresa Kaepernick after his 19-year-old mother, Heidi Russo, put him up for adoption at just five months old. Both of them were white and were not able to grasp some parts of his upbringing. He did have two siblings in Kyle and Devon but they also could not relate much to him.
Colin Kaepernick speaks out about his parents
The young kid wanted a lot of things growing up and had crafted some relationships with other African-American and biracial kids. At one point, Colin wanted cornrows but both of his parents disallowed him from getting the hairstyle because it would make him look unprofessional.
It was not only one incident when Colin felt alone when he was growing up. He wanted to express that this was also a problem that many kids are facing too.
"It's isolating. I've had a lot of responses from other transracial adoptees on that front. Like, yeah, the people that love you and that you love can also perpetuate very problematic elements, and those things can exist at the same time. And part of it is like, how do you grapple with that? How do you navigate that? And especially at a young age, where it's like, are you equipped to navigate that, and are your parents equipped to navigate that?" he declared.
The former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller knows that his parents loved him. In fact, Teresa and Rick often lashed back at other adults who were racist toward Colin. However, he just hopes that they were a tad bit more understanding of his situation back then.
