The Kansas City Chiefs have now attained a 3-0 record after winning against the Atlanta Falcons. They had a good mid-game to notch the lead over Kirk Cousins and Co. However, Patrick Mahomes posits that this is still not their Super Bowl-contending form. What should Andy Reid and the rest of the squad work on to get there? We'll answer that question in this article.
Chiefs vs. Falcons by the numbers
If fans solely go by the stat sheet, the outputs that each team produces looked fairly close. The Falcons were able to notch 311 total yards with an average gain of 5.6 yards per play. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense, on the other hand, may have gotten 345 total yards but their gain per play only clocked in at 4.8 yards.
Mahomes also threw an interception which halted the Chiefs' offensive momentum for a while. The fact that they also struggled to convert on third down eight out of 14 times also proved that there's so much to work on in this offense.
Patrick Mahomes gets real on their Super Bowl-contending status
The record might speak for itself but the three-time Super Bowl champion knows that they could do better. He noted that they have been subpar despite not enduring a loss.
"We haven’t played well, in really, all three games. We’ve been able to win, and that speaks to the character of the team, the grit, and how we’ve been in these situations before. But I’ll speak especially offensively for me, I feel like I haven’t played very well. That’s not a stats thing. I just feel like I’m missing opportunities whenever they’re out there and not throwing the ball in the exact spot I want it to be at," Mahomes declared.
He could very well be right about his own self-assessment. So far, the Chiefs signal-caller has not registered a game without an interception and has only logged one game with a passer rating more than 90.
Will he and the rest of the Chiefs be able to get it together as season goes by?
