The end of the NFL season is upon us, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. While two of the best teams in the NFL are set to take each other on, let's look back on the 2024 NFL season.
Two of the best running backs in the NFL, Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, both experienced amazing seasons during their first seasons with their new NFL teams; the Baltimore Ravens and Eagles respectively.
While Henry’s amazing season wasn’t a “career year” for him, it certainly was for Saquon. Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards. He had a chance to break the all-time season record, but was unfortunately inactive for the final week of the season.
Both Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen statistically took advantage of a “down year” for Patrick Mahomes. Both Jackson and Allen were named NFL MVP candidates and led both of their teams to division titles.
While both of these quarterbacks outperformed Mahomes statistically, it doesn’t change the fact that Mahomes still led the Chiefs to the best record in the league and took them back to the Super Bowl.
Many experts believed that it would be hard for Kansas City to reach the big game once again as KC only scored 30 points just once during the regular season.
However KC was able to stroll right past the Houston Texans in the divisional round and reached the big game once again after defeating the Buffalo Bills 32-29. Kansas City has a chance to be the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Two rookie quarterbacks shined bright in 2024, a season which included a stacked QB draft class. Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix were drafted by the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos, respectively.
Nix led the Broncos back to the playoffs for the first time since 2015, the year they won the Super Bowl. Nix provided hope for a franchise that has been looking for a long-term QB ever since Peyton Manning retired.
While Nix had a great rookie year, Daniels proceeded to outshine in most ways. Daniels also led the Commanders back to the playoffs, but he got them their first playoff win in almost two decades.
Daniels was able to reach the NFC championship with the wild card Commanders, but unfortunately lost to their division rivals: the Eagles.
2024 was supposed to be the year for the Detroit Lions, who reached the NFC title game the year prior. However, Detroit suffered from a litany of injuries on the defensive side that hindered their playoff run.
The Lions were unfortunately eliminated in the divisional round by the Commanders, but Detroit will be getting some key pieces back next season and could continue their dominant regular season runs.
The 2024 season was full of excitement, but with many contracts set to expire the 2025 offseason could set up an exciting 2025 NFL season.
