ABOUT Golf

The PGA Tour is the organizer of professional golf tours in North America. Originally established by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA of America) on April 10, 1916, it was spun off in December 1968 into a separate organization for tour players instead of club professionals.

The PGA Tour runs most of the week-to-week professional golf events such as The Players Championship, hosted at TPC Sawgrass, the FedEx Cup, with its finale at The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, and the biennial Presidents Cup.

CBS Sports and NBC Sports regularly broadcast the PGA Tour under contracts that last through 2030. Meanwhile, Golf Channel has served as the pay television rightsholder of the PGA Tour since 2007.

The PGA Tour also operates a subscription-based streaming service known as PGA Tour Live under ESPN+, which provides early-round coverage of events preceding Golf Channel’s television coverage.

Each PGA Tour player has earned a position on the priority-ranking system that is used to select full-field open tournaments. Its members represent most (if not all) of the world’s best golf players from 28 countries and territories.

The PGA Tour also had a PGA Player of the Year award dating back to 1948 (originally named the PGA Golfer of the Year and different from the PGA Tour Player of the Year) and is determined via a points system with points awarded for wins, money list position, and scoring average. This award was last given in 2022.

LIV Golf is a professional men's golf tour founded in 2021. The "LIV" refers to the Roman numeral 54, the number of holes played at LIV events. The first LIV Golf Invitational Series event started on June 9, 2022, at the Centurion Club in Hertfordshire, UK, and it eventually became the LIV Golf League the year after.

Former PGA Tour star Greg Norman was named CEO of LIV Golf when the tour was officially launched in October 2021.

The golf tour features a 14-event schedule and 48 contracted players. On July 27, 2022, Greg Norman announced that LIV Golf would have a promotion and relegation system, featuring a rankings list and a four-player relegation out of the 48 contracted players.

Negative public reaction from the media, PGA Tour

Because the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, funds LIV Golf, some journalists and human rights groups believe this is part of the efforts by the Saudi monarchy to improve its repressive public image through sports, or "sportswashing", given their history of human rights abuses.

LIV Golf has often been described as the golfing equivalent of the breakaway European Super League in football. When the new golf tour started forming in 2019, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said golfers who choose to defect to LIV Golf would be barred from PGA Tour events.
