ABOUT College Basketball

The NCAA Division 1 men's basketball tournament, or March Madness, determines the men's college national champions via a single-elimination tournament. It was first held in 1939, and it is one of the most anticipated yearly sporting events in the United States in March, given its share of upsets of favored teams.

The tournament has had a 68-team format since 2011, and it has largely been unchanged since 1985, when it was expanded to 64 teams. Before then, the tournament size varied from as little as eight to as many as 53.

In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the subsequent season, March Madness was held completely in Indiana as a precaution.

CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV broadcast the tournament matches under the program name NCAA March Madness. Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery pay $891 million annually for the broadcast rights that will run up to 2032.

Which teams won the most national men's basketball championships?

Thirty-seven schools have won the tournament, with UCLA having the most trophies at 11. Their coach, the late John Wooden, has the most wins of any coach in history with 10.

Behind UCLA are the University of Kentucky (eight), the University of Connecticut and North Carolina (six), Duke University and Indiana University (five), the University of Kansas (four), and Villanova University (two).

Seven programs are tied with two national titles, and 23 other programs have won it once.

The University of Connecticut under Dan Hurley aims to complete a three-peat in March 2025 after winning back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024.
