Executing a team concept into a mascot can be quite the challenge. A lot of the time, there is not one representative figure which will fully encapsulate the spirit of the university or college that they aim to represent. However, this does not stop schools from trying which makes for some odd figures on the field or hardwood whenever it is game time. So, who has the weirdest college mascot?
There are some mascots where people feel weird because of not knowing what they represent. This is where Big Red from Western Kentucky and Blue Bob from Xavier fall in. Some mascots just give off an unsettling aura like Purdue Pete and The Stanford Tree. One mascot in all of college sports has the perfect balance of this and it goes by the name of Friar Dom.
Nothing might be spookier than a mascot that's wearing a black hood. Providence has long had Friar Dom cheering and supporting. But, there is just something about his mouth being wide open or the fact that he is clothed in such a certain way which does not inspire cheer out of most college sports fans. In fact, even USA Today considers this mascot as the wackiest of all time.
There might be re-brands in certain college sports programs that may prompt them into having a weirder mascot than Providence. For now, it remains a consensus that Friar Dom is not the typical giver of joy in most audiences. In fact, it's unsettling aura could be what's throwing fans off during game days.
