ABOUT MLB

MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB) was founded in 1876. It consists of thirty teams, 29 from the United States and one from Canada. The season lasts 162 games and concludes with a postseason leading up to the World Series.

History of MLB

The National League was formed in 1876, and the American League was formed in 1900, which is when the first World Series was held. Baseball has a rich history and is known as America’s National Pastime because it was founded in America. The league has expanded numerous times, ultimately reaching the 30-team format it uses today.

MLB Teams

Both the NL and AL have 15 teams, making 30 total. Each team is split into three divisions, which consist of five teams each. These include:

AL West:

  • Seattle Mariners
  • Athletics
  • Los Angeles Angels
  • Texas Rangers
  • Houston Astros

AL Central:

  • Detroit Tigers
  • Minnesota Twins
  • Cleveland Guardians
  • Chicago White Sox
  • Kansas City Royals

AL East:

  • Toronto Blue Jays
  • Boston Red Sox
  • New York Yankees
  • Baltimore Orioles
  • Tampa Bay Rays

NL West:

  • Colorado Rockies
  • San Francisco Giants
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • San Diego Padres
  • Arizona Diamondbacks

NL Central:

  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • Cincinnati Reds
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Chicago Cubs
  • St. Louis Cardinals

NL East:

  • New York Mets
  • Philadelphia Phillies
  • Washington Nationals
  • Atlanta Braves
  • Miami Marlins

MLB Rules:

Games consist of nine innings. In each inning, both the away team and the home team have a chance to hit. Once a team records three outs in an inning, that inning is over. Runs are scored by getting a player around the three bases and back to home plate. This can be done by a home run, or by putting the ball in play when runners are already on base.

The team that scores the most runs wins. If both teams are tied after nine innings, teams compete in extra innings until a winner is crowned. In extra innings, a runner automatically begins the inning at second base, a rule that is viewed to be controversial.

Umpires call balls and strikes, to give batters a fair chance in each at bat. If a player swings and misses, it is automatically a strike. If a player hits a ball that lands in foul territory, it is automatically a strike, but a player cannot strike out on a foul ball. If a player receives three strikes in an at-bat, they strike out, and if a player takes four balls in an at-bat, they are awarded first base, which is called a walk.

MLB Season Breakdown:

The MLB season begins in late February with Spring training. Teams play around 25-30 exhibition games, in either Arizona or Florida, to prepare for the regular season.

From there, the regular season begins in either late March or early April. The regular season lasts 162 games and takes place over the course of six months. The top twelve teams reach the playoffs in October.

MLB Postseason:

The MLB Postseason consists of twelve teams. The three division champions from each league automatically qualify, as do the next three best teams, known as the Wild Card teams.

The postseason begins with the Wild Card round. The top two seeds get a bye in the Wild Card round, while the third seed hosts the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosts the fifth seed. The Wild Card Round is a three-game series.

The winners of the Wild Card round advance to the Divisional Round. In the Divisional Round, the top seed hosts the winner of the four-five matchup, while the second seed hosts the winner of the three/six matchup. The Divisional Round is a five-game series.

Next, the winners of the Divisional Round square off in the League Championship Series, where two teams are crowned the winners of the AL and NL. The LCS is a seven-game series.

Finally, the league champions face each other in the World Series. One final seven-game series to determine the World Champion.
