Josh Allen was named the AP NFL MVP for the 2024 season. He did so even though he was named to a second team all-pro instead of first-team all pro, that honor went to Lamar Jackson.
It’s been widely accepted that the NFL’s MVP award is basically a quarterback award at this point. Saquon Barkley just became the ninth player in NFL history to rush over 2,000 yards, but everyone knew that Barkley wasn’t going to win.
Last season, Christian McCaffrey had over 2,000 scrimmage yards yet the MVP went to Lamar Jackson who had an inferior season. When Derrick Henry rushed for 2,000 yards in 2020, that season’s MVP went to Aaron Rodgers.
It’s clear that quarterbacks are typically the prime candidate for the AP MVP award. However, it also appears that the NFL chooses their MVPs based on circumstance.
Allen won the 2024 MVP over Barkley and Jackson. Barkley was always going to be a longshot because he’s a running back and not a quarterback, but it can be argued that Jackson had a better season than Allen and should’ve won the coveted award.
After all, Jackson was named to a first-team all pro while Allen was named to the second team. The achilles heel for Jackson was that he’d already won the award twice, 2019 and most recently in 2023.
Allen had never won the award before and since he’s yet to win or even make a Super Bowl, the NFL decided the best way to make Allen’s star brighter is to give him his first MVP award.
While Allen had an impressive season in 2024 and deserved the right to named the 2024 MVP, it just seemed that his MVP was just as contrived as Jackson’s in 2023.
With that being said, who’s turn is it to win the once coveted award? Who’s turn is it to become a star in the NFL?
While it’s typically a quarterback award, there’s always that one darkhorse position player that makes a case for the MVP. For example, Barkley and McCaffrey were those two dark horses.
After winning the triple crown in receiving last season, Ja’Marr Chase is still young enough to accomplish that feat again. The combination between Chase and Joe Burrow has been electric since they both joined the league and can still grow even more.
Another Bengal worth mentioning is Burrow himself. Burrow could’ve won the MVP in 2024 if Cincinnati had made the playoffs. But at last, he came up just short after having better numbers than both Allen and Jackson.
If Cincy makes the postseason next year and Burrow puts up similar numbers, then if could be very likely that the NFL awards Burrow with his first MVP award in 2025.
The NFL could very well go the hollywood/comeback route with Patrick Mahomes. After losing the Super Bowl and having what would be considered a “down year” for him, Mahomes could very well come back even stronger in 2025.
If he takes KC back to the Super Bowl and maybe leads the NFL in touchdown passes, then the league could really establish his legacy with his third MVP award.
