Daniels to Deebo for six

The San Francisco 49ers have recently traded their #1 wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Samuel has been with the Niners since 2019 and was on the team when San Francisco reached the Super Bowl in 2019 and 2023.
During his six seasons in SF, Samuel was named to one pro bowl and one all-pro team; both in 2021. Coincidentally enough, 2021 is the only season where Samuel had over 1,000 receiving yards with a career high of 1,405 receiving yards.
Over the course of his Niners career, Samuel has struggled with consistency and injuries. It was detrimental to the team when he was off the field and sometimes when he was on the field he wasn’t able to produce much.
During his last season in San Francisco, Samuel played and started in 15 games for the Niners. However, his numbers weren’t too impressive as he only notched 670 receiving yards and only three receiving touchdowns.
It’s safe to say that Samuel wore out his welcome in San Francisco and that it was in the best interest for both teams to see Samuel in another uniform. That being said, what is there to expect with his new team in Washington.
The Commanders are coming off a miracle season that saw the breakout of their franchise rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Behind Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn, Washington was able to make it all the way to the NFC championship game last season.
They unfortunately ran into the eventual Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, which promptly ended their dream season. Nevertheless, Daniels’ incredible rookie season has provided hope in Washington for years to come.
With the addition of Samuel, the Commanders pose a real threat to the Eagles in the NFC east. The team already has a stacked offense with wide receiver Terry McLaurin and their running back duo Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson Jr.
The team has other holes on their roster to address, such as the tight end position and special teams, but they’ve solidified their offense by adding Samuel to their already scary personnel.
As for the 49ers, what does this trade mean? The first thing that pops into everyone’s heads is that they’re finally going to be able to pay Brock Purdy. Purdy is entering his fourth year in the NFL and is due for an extension.
Niners GM, John Lynch, has made it clear that the team wants to extend Purdy and they’ve made their cap room flexible after trading away Samuel.
Purdy, however, is coming off of a rough season where he saw the majority of his offensive weapons hurt this season, such as Brandon Ayiuk and Christian McCaffrey.
Niners fans are likely reluctant to keep Purdy for the long term and they saw in 2024 that Purdy wasn’t getting bailed out by Kyle Shanahan’s system.
Will Purdy and the Niners bounce back next season or is the Samuel trade the first sign that the 49ers missed their Super Bowl window.
