The Philadelphia Eagles claimed their second Super Bowl title after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX. Philly’s first Super Bowl Championship came in 2017 led by Nick Foles who would end up defeating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
While everyone expected Saquon Barkley to take over Philadelphia’s offense and run his way to a championship. However, it was Jalen Hurts who stepped up and gave a great performance in the big game.
Hurts was not expected to be the catalyst for the Eagles during their Super Bowl run. While Barkley’s legs got them to the big game, it was Hurts who ended up finishing the job.
Barkley was held in check for most of the game, he finished with 25 carries with 57 rushing yards and zero touchdowns. Hurts on the other hand went 17 for 22 with 221 passing yards and threw two touchdown passes and only one interception.
Hurts also had 11 rushing attempts for 72 yards and one rushing touchdown. Hurts' 72 rushing yards set a new Super Bowl record for the most yards rushed by a quarterback in the big game.
Hurts’ performance earned him the prestigious Super Bowl MVP award and likely cemented himself as a Philly sports legend.
Hurts has come a long way to earn his first Super Bowl title. As a redshirt freshman at Alabama, Hurts was the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide and took them all the way to the National Championship in 2017.
However, Alabama would end up losing to the Clemson Tigers 35-31. Hurts was able to take the Tide back to the National Championship game the very next season against the Georgia Bulldogs.
After trailing 13-0 against Georgia, Hurts was benched at halftime in favor of Tua Tagovailoa. Tua then led a dramatic comeback and led the Tide to a 26-23 overtime victory.
Tua’s performance gave him the starting QB role entering 2018, putting Hurts on the bench for his junior season.
Hurts then transferred to Oklahoma in 2019 for his senior season. He became the team's starting quarterback and finished second in the Heisman voting behind Joe Burrow.
Hurts’ stellar season greatly improved his draft stock and was eventually drafted by the Eagles with the 53rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.
Hurts became the Eagles’ full time starting quarterback in 2021 and since then he’s been named to two pro bowls, one all-pro team and took the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2022.
Just like in the past, Hurts fell just short of a championship in 2022 after losing to the Chiefs 38-35. In 2023, Philadelphia was eliminated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild card round.
After the team acquired Barkley through free agency, the Eagles once again reached the big game and this time they were able to claim their title. Hurts was finally able to get the monkey off his back and officially claim himself as a legit champion.
After this championship season, is it time to give Jalen Hurts his flowers?
