When the Carolina Panthers traded up in the 2023 NFL Draft, there were a lot of questions as to why they didn't wait for Caleb Williams or even pick Bryce Young. All of those questions only got tougher to answer when the Alabama football product struggled mightily throughout his rookie year. Now, Dave Canales has opted to use Andy Dalton as their starting signal-caller. Will they ever utilize the young quarterback again? We'll answer that question.
Bryce Young's struggles
The Panthers' first overall pick in the 2023 Draft had a rough rookie campaign. With totals of 2,877 yards and 10 interceptions thrown, a lot of people were blaming the system that Bryce Young was operating in for his struggles. The entrance of Dave Canales in their squad brought about a lot of optimism. After all, he was the same coach who gave Baker Mayfield a resurgence.
Those hopes were all thrown out of the window after their first two games. Young failed to register a single touchdown but gave up three interceptions. The fact that he only gave the Panthers 245 passing yards in that time also baffled a lot of fans.
Are the Panthers planning to bench him for good?
With the decision to make Andy Dalton their top quarterback, a lot of teams had shown interest in trading for Young. But, it is very clear that Canales and the rest of his staff are opting to keep the first overall pick of the 2023 draft. Reports from Ian Rapoport even suggest that the Panthers front office remain stern in trying to develop him.
"When someone as talented as Young gets benched, teams always call regarding a potential trade. In fact, interest would be expected. But Canales said on Wednesday that there are no plans to deal him. Young cut it loose with the scout team in a way they hope he will eventually do when he's back on the field," the renowned insider said.
There is still hope for him to find his groove and notch the starting job back this season. But, it will take a lot of effort before he gets trusted again. Hopefully, it all works out for Young and that his flashes of greatness with the Crimson Tide get shown again in the NFL.
