Prior to becoming a legend with the Kansas City Chiefs, dating Taylor Swift, and joining the race for being the best tight end of all-time, Travis Kelce had a fairly troubled past. A lot of it involved his run with the Cincinnati Bearcats and how he was nearly not drafted into the NFL. Thankfully, Jason Kelce was there to help him get a lot of shots still. So, what did happen to Travis back in college and how did it affect his legacy? Let's uncover the story.
Travis Kelce struggles with marijuana
The Chiefs legend was not always a tight end. He started his career as a quarterback and played under center alongside his brother, Jason Kelce. However, the lead-up to the 2010 All-State Sugar Bowl changed the trajectory of his career. Coach Brian Kelly alongside the rest of the coaching staff found out that he had tested positive for marijuana.
Kelce was then suspended for a whole season and kicked out of the team. He had to work hard and study to keep his slot in campus. Chances of him coming back to the squad were looking bleak but a life-changing event happened.
How did Jason Kelce help his brother?
The historically great center did not want his brother to struggle anymore. Coach Butch Jones talked to Jason and eventually Travis got his spot back. However, he was no longer going to play at the signal-caller spot. Travis gladly accepted the move to tight end without knowing how big of a trajectory-shifting move it was.
"He went into the coaches office and talked to numerous coaches to try and give me another chance. I'm forever in debt to this guy for putting his name, our name, the Kelce name, on the line. When I say I owe it all to him, I really do," Travis said about Jason.
There would not be a Chiefs tight end great of the 2010s and the inspiration for Taylor Swift's 'The Alchemy' without Jason Kelce.
