Coach Dan Campbell was noticeably missing a key part of his blocking and receiving corps in crunch time against the Arizona Cardinals. They may have still gotten the win because of Jared Goff's production which led to the 20-13 win but the sight of Sam LaPorta going down was a headache that most fans were not prepared for. How is the tight end doing and will he get to play in Week 4? We'll dissect his status.
Sam LaPorta's injury
The Lions through Coach Dan Campbell have confirmed that the tight end has suffered from a sprained ankle. He was able to return to the game but they were clearly erring on the side of caution when it came to LaPorta.
Typically, this type of injury would take one to three weeks to fully recover from. It is also a different conversation when it comes to when the Lions would have him back on the field. With the way they chose to keep him in Week 4, LaPorta may have a shot of playing against the Seattle Seahawks.
How did the Lions tight end do?
Coach Campbell has been opting to use him as a decoy or blocker since the start of the season. This explains why he has not gotten more than five receptions throughout their first three games. Their win against the Cardinals was no different.
Goff delivered two passes to LaPorta and he ran with it until the Cardinals defense took him down. He notched 36 total yards for them before having schemes around him eased significantly. The plan to have him as a dynamic blocker rather than a pass catcher might be extended due to this injury.
