After being in the Super Bowl last season, a lot of fans expected the San Francisco 49ers to have a chip on their shoulder and make a generational run. So far, the squad has not delivered well on these expectations. They are now 1-2 for the season and Kyle Shanahan posits that it was their mindset heading into the Los Angeles Rams game which cost them a lot. What was the issue that the head coach pointed out? Let's uncover it in his statement.
49ers choke against the Rams
Brock Purdy and the rest of the squad from the Bay Area started off strong. They notched 14 points in just the first period and managed to keep the Rams scoreless. But, that was the only positive part of their Week 3 outing.
In the second quarter, they could not score. Hopes were alive after they scored a touchdown and notched an extra point after halftime but Matthew Stafford and Co. were fighting back. When crunch time commenced, the 49ers were left stunned as they allowed the Rams to notch 13 points while they could only produce three points.
The loss was devastating as the 49ers lost with a very slim 27-24 scoreline.
Kyle Shanahan blasts his team for giving Matthew Stafford hope
If there is a huge mistake any squad should not make in the league, it is being too complacent. The 49ers had a big cushion but everything eventually popped because they were not executing properly down the stretch. It was for the same reason that they let the Super Bowl slip past their hands against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Coach Shanahan noted that they should not be giving teams momentum at all if they want a shot at hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy come February.
"You've got to take their hope away. You give Stafford too much hope and you put a ball in his hands at the end, it's not a situation you want to be in. That's where I thought we had a chance to run away with it, not give them any hope. That gave them a lot of hope. Got them back in it ... those are three big plays in the game," he said.
Being 4th in the NFC West is not ideal for a 49ers squad who has Super Bowl hopes. Will they be able to turn things around come Week 4?
