The Mysterious Disappearance of the Basketball Player Rico Harris

Harris is a talented former basketball player with the age and life experience to relate well to today's teenagers. Rico was born in 1977, and by high school, he stood out as a young phenom around 7 feet tall who hailed from Los Angeles, California. His combination of size and ability soon made him one of the elite players in his class, turning a lackluster Temple City High School program into a playoff team.
Rico had already impressed college scouts and was a top recruit nationwide. Following that praise at Los Angeles City College, where he eventually won a state title in 2009, Rico went to Division I Cal State Northridge. Unfortunately, he also had several personality conflicts and was eventually kicked off the team.
Rico had his setbacks, but he was still not deterred from a career in professional basketball. Afterwards, he went on to play semi-professionally with teams such as the San Diego Stingrays and St. Louis Storm before signing with the Harlem Globetrotters for one season in 2000. But just a month after signing with the Globetrotters, Rico was brutally attacked and no longer able to play basketball competitively.
The Stress Spiral
The attack on Rico once again broke his body and spirit. He was wrestling with addiction in subsequent years and became embroiled in a life of drug abuse, followed by court dates after he wound up on the wrong side of the law. So goes the life of a once bright basketball star who appears to be wandering without the foundation that gave him his ability.
Somehow, though, in 2007, Rico overcame his addiction and turned his life around. He eventually kicked the heroin, and his Salvation Army-provided rehabilitation program is something he credits with turning him completely sober, leading to a good working job as a security guard. It was during this period that he met Jennifer Song, and the two ultimately developed a serious relationship with one another. In 2014, Rico moved to Seattle to be with her.
It seemed as though Rico had finally found the new beginning he was looking for, and it looked better than ever. That all changed in an instant on October 10, 2014.
The Mysterious Disappearance
Rico was driving from his mom's house in Alhambra, California, back to Seattle, where he and Jennifer were living. Jennifer received a phone call from him around 10:45 a.m. in the morning, informing her that he would pull over and grab some sleep before setting off for the drive further. No one would ever hear from Rico again.
Rico's cell phone lost reception at 11:15 a.m., and he never spoke to Jennifer or anyone else on the telephone afterward. Three days later, his car was found in a rural park area about 60 miles north, the Yolo County Sheriff's Office said. The car was empty and barely started, but Rico had disappeared.
Search and rescue efforts began soon after, utilizing all-terrain vehicles, aircraft equipped with thermal imaging cameras, and K9 units. His backpack, with his phone and its charger inside, was eventually found, as well as a plastic bottle that smelt heavily of alcohol. Yet, there was no sign of Rico for all the clues this room contained.
The Hunt Continues
In the days and weeks that followed, a couple of reported sightings matched Rico's description, but none ever led to anything being confirmed. Investigators combed the area again, but with each minute that passed and then became hours without news of Rico having been found alive nearby, hope dimmed.
The physical search was scaled down on October 22, and the Yolo County Sheriff's Office announced that the investigation had become major. But since then, the case has remained largely inactive. Decades have passed with no significant advances or developments in his disappearance, leaving Rico's family, friends, and even those who never knew him to wrestle with what they do not know about where he is now.
Unresolved Questions
The missing person's case of Rico Harris has devastated those who knew and cared about him. But his mother, Margaret Fernandez, has held out hope that her son will be found, and more than two years after he vanished, she can not abandon the quest to find answers. Rico's girlfriend, Jennifer Song, has also spoken out in favor of the case and is hopeful that continued media pressure and scrutiny will lead to answers.
In addition to the personal cost, Rico's case has shined a spotlight on some of the systemic problems plaguing missing persons cases, even as they focus disproportionately on individuals who are sick and have an addiction. That a man the size and build of Rico could seemingly so completely disappear has left many wondering about just how effective search and rescue efforts are for someone believed to have gone missing on dry land, an increasing fear after each additional failed mission.
To this day, no one has learned the mystery of how Rico Harris vanished. Had he disappeared on purpose, or was there foul play involved? These questions still plague those who knew him and the wider audience following his story.
This hope, however fleeting, is all that Rico's friends and family have as they continue searching. For now, the tale of a talented basketball phenomenon who disappeared without any trace will go down as one of the most mysterious and tragic cases in near history.
