The Jumpman logo is the most iconic branding in all of sports. This silhouette of Michael Jordan jumping in the air has become synonymous to high-performance sports gear and street culture. Many people in their lifetimes have wanted to wear His Airness' shoes but that would not be possible without Howard White and Nike. This is why the Chicago Bulls legend had one big philanthropic effort that resonates very close to his heart.
Michael Jordan and Howard White donated $1 million to Providence Health and Services' Cardiac Amyloidosis department. As a result, the healthcare institution will also be set to rename their department to the Nike vice president. Why did they make such a big donation? Well, it's because White suffered a congestive heart failure in 2017 and Providence helped him recover.
The two simply wanted to give back. Jordan's involvement was largely because he acknowledged how much White has done to improve his brand. After all, the Nike vice president was his primary contact to the brand when he was first starting out. Phil Knight also caught wind of this and fully supported them in their philanthropic endeavor.
White was nothing short of grateful to Nike, Jordan, and Providence. So, the least he could do was thank them and pay it forward: “If you believe anything is possible, you owe it to the world to help someone else believe. I believe this new center will help save more lives, help people avoid needing a heart transplant like I did. And I’m both humbled and inspired by the friends who are joining in to help Providence make this belief a reality.”
The power of philanthropy goes a long way. Hopefully, White and Jordan's donation gets to help a lot of struggling patients in their pursuit of getting proper treatment.
