Why did Steve Nash leave the Mavericks?

Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash were supposed to be the next big duo in the NBA. Mark Cuban did a lot to keep these two together but it was just to no avail. The Canadian superstar ended up leaving to join the Phoenix Suns but the Dallas Mavericks went on a long road to win the 2011 NBA Championship. Up to this day, it remains a question to Texas sports fans why one of the greatest point guards did this. Let's uncover the reason.
Steve Nash was already set to become very expensive by the 2004 NBA Free Agency race. With the Mavericks, he was set to earn a big bag after notching two All-NBA selections and NBA All-Star nods. It became apparent that Mark Cuban needed to put out a lot of money in order to prolong this star's six-year stay.
Despite the championship in 2011, the Mavericks owner still regretted the last offer he made to Nash: "I still got the pad when Steve called me for that last chance. I wrote down 'Mike Bibby money,' which is what he wanted and the max at the time. It was more that Steve only played 28-29 minutes per game that season, and we were worried about the injuries. It wasn't any disrespect to his game, and honestly, that propelled Steve. The fact that we let him go, two-time MVP, great guy, we're friends again. A mistake, the biggest mistake I ever made with the Mavs."
Nash went on to win two Most Valuable Player awards with the Suns. However, he was not able to sniff the Larry O'Brien trophy in his career.
