Being labeled as the dominant player in NBA history has to set a lot of expectations. Shaquille O'Neal was always known as the big man with an even bigger heart. A lot of people have come to love him more even when he retired from basketball. However, little does everyone know that he was such a huge baby at birth. How big was he exactly?
Shaquille O'Neal was born on the 6th of March in 1972. Before he found his footing with the LSU Tigers, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, or even the Miami Heat, he had to be taken care of by his parents. His parents, Joe Toney and Lucille O'Neal, had some athletic genes to them but they could not have prepared for how huge their baby would become just at the point of birth.
The NBA legend was welcomed into the world as he weighed seven pounds and 11 ounces. This is way above the average weight of a supposed newborn which is about five pounds and just eight ounces. It was also at that moment where his parents would know that their son would be really tall. This was because his length was measured at 22 inches. Again, it is also above average because the mean is at 18 inches.
These early signs of insane physical attributes may have caught the eyes of his parents. They may have known that their baby was going to be such a big man and dominant athlete just from that point. It could also explain why both of them were very supportive of the young athlete as he made his way into the NBA.
