Zach Edey is in a three-horse race for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. While Jared McCain and Bub Carrington both have their merits, the Memphis Grizzlies rookie has the opportunity to steal the crown from them. However, not much is known about this behemoth aside from the fact that he's from the Purdue Boilermakers and got crowned National Player of the Year twice. Let's start to get to know him through his ethnicity.
The huge rookie from the Grizzlies was born in Canada. His long stay in Toronto allowed him to find the love in different endeavors. But, it was not always basketball that he loved. In fact, he started out his athletic endeavors with baseball. His insane growth spurt prompted him to get into the hard court and ball out instead. Edey then started his NBA journey from there.
Along with him came his very supportive parents. Glen and Julia Edey are his parents. The latter might ring more of a bell for college basketball and Purdue fans. This is because she has not missed big games at Mackey Arena to support Zach. Glen primarily has a white heritage. Julia, on the other hand, may have been born in Canada but her parents were immigrants from China.
One might also think that the Grizzlies rookie learned basketball from his dad. But, it was his mom who was a former basketball player. Julie is also measured at 6-foot-3 which means that her genes were a big factor in making the star that fans all know today. She might also be responsible for keeping Zach tethered by helping him balance his academics, sports, and cultural tradition.
