You could argue that Memphis Grizzlies rookie Desmond Bane was one of the most underrated rookies from last season. The former TCU standout flew under the radar last term, but there’s no denying that he played a key role for his team as the Grizzlies emerged as a surprise package in last season’s playoffs.
There were high hopes for Bane in the recently-concluded Las Vegas Summer league and the 23-year-old absolutely delivered. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard showcased his skillset throughout the tournament, leading Memphis with 21.5 points per contest. The Grizzlies went 3-2 in the tournament, and Bane ended up sitting out their Summer League finale. It was mission accomplished for him at that point, and he had nothing more to prove.
Bane was without a doubt one of the standouts of the Summer League, and his performances for the Grizzlies certainly made their mark. He set out to make an impact in the tournament, and Desmond Bane achieved his goal.
Bane now looks to be well on his way to a breakout sophomore campaign. He averaged 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 22.3 minutes per game last season behind Grizzlies star Ja Morant. Bane could be handed a bigger role in 2021-22, and based on what we’ve seen from him in the Summer League, it does seem like the highly-promising youngster could be making waves in the league in the near future. Now is the time to get excited Grizzlies fans.
