The 2017 Rising Stars Challenge MVP Jamal Murray has been teamed up with the Denver Nuggets since his rookie year. The loyalty and confidence he possessed have driven him to help his team win the 2023 Championship.
However, many have wondered whether the work culture has something to do with Murray’s background. Another question that rose along is if Murray is bi-racial or mixed.
Jamal Murray’s Parents
His Father: Roger Murray
Jamal’s father, Roger Murray, was originally from Jamaica. He moved to Canada when he was nine years old. Roger was into sports as well, a track and field athlete who also played basketball.
From early on, the older Murray had believed Jamal could do well in sports. Roger was the one who taught his kid to be athletically, emotionally, and mentally strong.
The two called their mental preparation practices the ‘mental Kung Fu.’
“It’s basically just a way of controlling your body and focusing on your goal. Knowing what you can do and what you want to do and what it takes to get here,” Roger said.
He added that concentration plays a vital role in success. In order to do something special, one has to make sacrifices. This, in turn, helped people not lose track of themselves.
His Mother: Sylvia Murray
Sylvia Murray was known to be Syrian which makes Jamal bi-racial with Canadian nationality. Although it’s neither confirmed nor denied if Sylvia has any background in sports, Jamal acknowledged how helpful his mother has been in his journey.
“She’s always been helping me. She helps me with my schoolwork sometimes. She would talk to me and send me messages when she’s at work telling me she loves me and bless my heart, stuff like that. She’s always had a positive attitude toward me. Very supportive of what I do,” Jamal shared.
The NBA has had a multicultural diversity with athletes coming from different races and cultures. With Jamal, his bi-racial background pulled in more support from his parents’ own countries. This overflowed with the amount of love and support he also got from his family.
Like what his father, Roger Murray, said, “Whatever my boy wants to do, I’m going to help him be the very best at it.”
