The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Dalton Knecht and Bronny James with the 17th and 55th picks, respectively, in the 2024 NBA draft. Being a rookie definitely puts some pressure on you. This pressure usually comes from yourself, your teammates, and the fans.
However, with two rookies on the team, people wonder if there is more pressure on Bronny James than Dalton Knecht. Being a part of the first historical father-son duo in NBA history, how does Bronny shoulder this pressure? Are they off of Dalton’s back?
Why Dalton Knecht
The 6-foot-5 guard for the University of Tennessee has skills that make him a prospect for many NBA teams. His performance in college led him to win SEC Player of the Year and was named a First Team All-American.
Rob Pelinka, Lakers' Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager, expressed how excited the Team is to have Knecht on the team. He emphasized that with Knecht’s addition to the team, they expect his abilities and competitive nature to contribute to the team.
Pelinka also said that this move addresses much of what the Lakers need–a “three-level shooter.” Dalton carries the hopeful burden of bringing the franchise back to championship contention.
Bronny’s Shielding Presence
Another rookie on the team, Bronny, already has a profile known to the fans. Obviously, there are far bigger expectations for someone whose father led great teams.
The big Lakers fanbase has been openly posting their opinion on the younger James. Most are saying that while Bronny has a talent for the sport, he’s just not NBA-ready yet.
Summer League Stats Comparison
During the Summer League, Dalton Knecht was able to put in an average of 18.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in six games with a series of great plays. On the other hand, Bronny James averaged 7 points.
Looking at the statistics, people aren’t happy with the numbers Bronny is putting in the charts. The heightened expectations because of his family background definitely weighs in on the pressure.
Knecht and James are both youngsters and rookies in the NBA this coming season. However, Bronny’s presence given his family name truly shield most of the pressure from the fans.
The Lakers fanbase surely expect a lot from both players. The only difference is that words for Dalton are accompanied by praises instead of negativity.
