The NBA star LeBron James has been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs since ten years ago. While he was initially cleared, more evidence was brought to light by ESPN’s Mike Fish.
LeBron James’ Involvement In PED Scandal
ESPN obtained 1,400 pages of unredacted federal investigation documents. There, it states the names of athletes and figures that surfaced during the initial investigation of the largest doping operation in U.S. sports history, the Biogenesis investigation.
“Among them are former WWE star Paul “The Big Show” Wight; former boxing champion Shannon Briggs; one of the most well-known trainers of prominent athletes in David Alexander; and Ernest “Randy” Mims, a longtime friend and business manager of LeBron James,” wrote Fish.
There was insufficient evidence to confirm that Alexander or Mims gave PEDs to athletes, but it sparked up rumors enough to investigate James.
Mims was found to have purchased testosterone, boosting injections, and a blood draw from Carlos Acevedo for what he classified as “personal use.”
Acevedo was a known dealer of PEDs and a bigger target of the investigation. In exchange for referrals, Mims received substances for free, said Acevedo. However, no athletes were listed among the many referrals in the documents.
During James’ time working with Alexander while playing for the Heat and the Cavs, Alexander was not referred to as his trainer. He was listed as James’s wife’s personal trainer instead.
Earlier in 2023, former UFC star and self-confessed PED user Chael Sonnen suggested that LeBron has the same PEDs provider as him.
“We have the same drug guy, I know exactly what he's doing. EPO matters, it's the reason LeBron takes it, it matters. EPO increases your red blood cells, which gives you endurance so you can play all game long,” Sonnen shared on Flagrant 2 podcast.
There’s still no conclusion whether LeBron really used performance-enhancing drugs. However, there is reason to be suspicious of him considering the linkage he has to those involved in the case, BALCO founder said.
