College football programs are likely going to exist in perpetuity. This is why having debates about the greatest player to have ever played a position for a school is always fun. One large program that has solidified themselves in football history is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They have developed decades worth of Heisman Trophy winners and national champions in the campus. But, who was the greatest ever to throw the ball for this squad?
Obviously, there are some top picks in some people's minds. Depending on when someone became a fan of the Fighting Irish, they could throw out names like Rick Mirer, Tony Rice, or Brady Quinn. However, none of those come close to the dominance that Joe Theismann exhibited in just three years of playing.
Theismann still holds the school records for both passing yards and touchdowns. He recorded 4,411 and 31 of them respectively. Moreover, he was also such a dual threat weapon for Notre Dame. He was one of only two signal-callers who managed to record 1,000 rushing yards in a single season which is insane for someone who has an arm like that.
Furthermore, Theismann proved that he was not just good at the college level unlike some quarterbacks. He went on to ball out in the NFL and led the Washington Redskins to a Super Bowl. The cherries on top? Well, he also won a Most Valuable Player award and got Walter Payton Man of the Year honors along with being crowned AP Offensive Player in 1983. His talents clearly represented the Fighting Irish way of playing football. This is simply he's just a cut above the rest.
