This new era ushered in by both the NIL and transfer portal has been brutal for all programs across college football. One might think that it's only the small schools who lose players but legacy universities are also experiencing the same, if not worse. Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers are the biggest example of this when it comes to the December 2024 window.
Auburn football lost two of their quarterbacks in a matter of an hour due to the transfer portal. Holden Geriner is set to leave Hugh Freeze's system and have two years of eligibility left. But, the concern is not about the signal-caller at all. It is largely about the Tigers because they are heading into a huge quarterback conundrum in the coming months as they try to rebuild.
Alongside Geriner, Hank Brown is also set to leave the team which has disheartened a lot of fans. Moreover, Payton Thorne will no longer be able to compete because he has completely used up all his years of eligibility. This leaves Auburn with no quarterback in their system which is a tough spot to be in for a program that is largely considered a powerhouse in the SEC.
Geriner has still not decided which schools he will be considering. However, a lot of programs may want him and Thorne because they know that these two have been great at running Coach Freeze's complicated schemes when given the time. For Auburn, life is set to become very difficult.
