Ann Arbor, MI—The Michigan Wolverines have just come off of one of the biggest upsets in college football this season. As 20-point underdogs, they went into the Horshoe in Columbus and knocked off the second-ranked Buckeyes. However, for Michigan quarterback Davis Warren, this is not the only upset he has pulled off in life.
In her interview with College Gameday, Davis' Mom stated, "He was a super healthy kid and was on a good path," However, Davis said he felt tired and ill one day after a series of tests. He was diagnosed with Leukemia. A cancer of the blood and bone. He started chemotherapy immediately.
Davis said he often asked and questioned if he would survive or make it through all of this in his interview with College Gameday. After 5 months of treatment, he was deemed cancer-free, and in October, he was back on the field playing high school football.
Then he arrived in Michigan as a walk-on for the Wolverines, and he now had a new battle. Being a walk-on, he was also hesitant to share the story of his past and his struggle with cancer; Jeff Warren Davis' father said, "He wanted to be accepted and known as a quarterback, a leader, and a football player first." "I wanted nothing to do with the hospital or cancer, but then my story started to get out a little bit, and people were reaching out telling me how I was an inspiration to their son, daughter, or grandkid." Davis Warren said.
That fall, he regularly visited the Children's Hospital to visit kids fighting cancer. While he was not the starting quarterback for the Wolverines, this walk-on was doing his best in the community off the field and working hard on the field. I also met Michigan fan Hudson Gazsi, whose mom said in her interview, "They acted as if they were best buds; this was something I had never really seen before in Hudson." The two talk regularly as if this is Davis' little brother while also inspiring Hudson, knowing that if Davis could do it, so could he. 2 weeks ago, Hudson was deemed cancer-free.
This fall, he finally got the chance to take the reins of this Michigan offense, and he has proven that he is most definitely the guy that Shemar Moore wants as his signal caller. The Wolverines might have gone 7-5, but they defeated the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, which is the one team every Michigan fan wants to beat. They pulled off the upset in Columbus.
The Wolverines will await selection on Sunday, December 8th, to see what bowl game they will play in to close out their season.
