Who is the portal king of college football? Coach Prime or Lane Kiffin? We will take a look at why the debate of who the portal king of college football is.
Since the introduction of the transfer portal it has been an opportunity for players to transfer to another school without the penalty of sitting out one year. This has made it nice for players who got to school and decide it's not a good fit to transfer or for the players to follow a coach should he get another job elsewhere. Programs have been able to turnover a roster in record time and be competitors.
Of course there are some players who use the transfer portal because they are not playing and that is why some fans are opposed to the portal. Curt Cignetti was able to flip Indiana in one year as a lot of his players from James Madison followed him as well as when Lincoln Riley first took over at USC after leaving for Oklahoma. However, Lane Kiffiin and Coach Prime have been the most dominant at recruting out of the transfer portal.
Kiffin at Ole Miss has had no problems recruiting out of high school even dating back to his days at USC. However, Kiffin since the portal was a thing has averaged 10-15 players in the portal. It also would seem everytine you see a player is narrowed down his schools in the portal Ole Miss and Kiffin are 9 time out of 10 right there. However in the Rocky Mountains there is a competitor who is right there with him.
Coach Prime has no problems recruiting in the portal himself. Of course when he came over from Jackson State in his first year he brought his “Louie Luggage” with him to Boulder. He also had 50 transfers in his first season in Colorado along with the likes of players like Heisman Winner Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horn Jr.,LaJohtay Wester. Coach Prime and his staff were able to rebuild his offense and defensive line after the 2023 season, a spot the Buffaloes lacked in. Even his sons Shilo and Sheduer had opened their Dm’s for transfers to DM. Shilo however made a point if stating Colorado is “not Last Chance U” in his post
Now of course with bringing in tons of transfers there is a huge loss of players. For example Coach Prime when he arrived in Boulder he had 70 players. By the time fall came only 10 of the players were from the original roster. Coaches are often scrutinized for this but in the era of the portal it is a norm.
As for the question of who is the transfer portal Kiffin tweeted out his vote in Coach Prime as the transfer portal king back in 2023 With the comment “Portal (Goat Emoji).The tweet has since been deleted by Kiffin. Coach Prime “Aint hard 2 find”.
