Jackson, MS– In September of 2020 Jackson State announced the hiring of their 21st football coach , Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders and now Coach Prime is in Colorado however, he has seem to have started some sort of other new trend in a sense of hiring coaches with now multiple NFL players being mentioned or hired for NFL jobs let's take a look at some of these hires.
Norfolk State and Michael Vick
Vick becomes the head coach of the Norfolk State Spartans in Virgina which means Vick will head home for his first job coaching.Vick the left handed QB was one of the best running quarterbacks to play to this day. Vick since his retirement has been working with FOX sports as an analyst before Norfolk State reached out to Vick. Vick as a player went to college at Virgina Tech and was the quarterback of the Hokies who had over 3,000 yards passing in his college craeer and over 1,000 yards rushing in his college career. Also running a 4.25 yard 40 fastest ever by a quarterback. He was drafted number one overall by the Falcons after they traded the number three pick and their third round pick in 2001 to the San Diego Chargers. After playing for other teams like the Eagles, Jets and Steelers he decided it was time for him to retire in 2015. Then in 2024 the Spartans of Norfolk State announced they were hiring Vick and the world of sports exploded. Vick has hit the transfer portal to get players to help him build up this Norfolk State program and it will be exciting to see what Coach Vick can do in his first season at the helm.
Delaware State and Desean Jackson
On December 27th the Deleware State Hornets announced they were hiring Desean Jackson one of the best return players of all time and fastest receivers to play in the NFL. Jackson was drafted out of the University of California-Berkley by the Eagles and he also had a long stint with the Washington Commanders before bouncing around the league for a bit of time. He retired in 2023 with over 11,000 yard receiving yards and over 1,000 yards in return yards and four touchdowns on special teams including the “Miracle at the Meadowlands” in which he returned a punt 65 yards to the house in the final 14 seconds in the game and the Eagles won the game he returned it after he fumbled it for a bit. Then following the hiring of his former teammate Michael Vick he was hired Jackson was hired by Delware State and he is coming up on his first seasons at the helm of the Hornets.
Other names that have joined coaching staffs and names to watch
Warren Sapp joined Coach Primes staff at Colorado as a defensive analyst and has helped out with the D-Line and has seen huge improvements.Also joining Coach Prime’s staff is Marshall Faulk another hall of famer this time as the running backs coach and he will look to help the running backs at Colorado. Ray Lewis was talked about as a potential candidate earlier this year the Hall of Fame linebacker is a name to watch in the later years as a head coach in the future.
