Peyton Manning or Arch Manning? Tennessee Orange or Burnt Orange? The eyes of Texas or the Smoky Mountains? Knoxville or Austin? Which UT is the real UT? Texas or Tennessee?
The answer is not so easy because, depending on geography, this answer could be different. People from the south and Tennesee refer to UT as the University of Tennesee. They call it UT-Knox. However, in the West and Texas, UT is Texas also known as UT-Austin, so how do we settle this debate? Well, with numbers, of course, because we can not just give our opinion.
Texas:
Founded in 1833 in Austin, Texas, the University of Texas has produced thousands of pro athletes, and of course, we are only focused on football. There are currently 41 players in the NFL, a few of whom are Xavier Worthy and Justin Tucker—legends like Colt McCoy, Vince Young, and Earl Campbell. Texas also has a few players to go in the draft this season. Steve Sarkisian this season led the Longhorns to the 12-team playoff, and the Horns had a shot at an SEC title in their first season as part of the SEC. However, prior to this year, the Horns were in the Big 12, a conference they and rival Oklahoma dominated. All-time Texas has an all-time record of 953-392-33 and four national titles in football, two Heisman winners, and 63 All-Americans in their football since it first began in 1893, over 130 years ago.
Tennessee: Founded in 1794 in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Volunteers of Tennessee have also produced thousands of athletes, but currently, in the NFL, the Vols have 37 current players. As well as legendary players such as the great Peyton Manning. Josh Heupel took the Vols to the 12-team playoff much like his UT counterpart Steve Sarkisian did at Texas; however, the Vols were bounced out of the first round. Their record in football is 870-415-53. Six national titles, zero Heisman winners, and 41 All-Americans in their football team's history, which started in 1891, two years before the Longhorns.
The question, however, still remains on what makes each school the real UT. In each case, history or winning is a point for each school. Texas has a higher winning percentage all the time, but Tennessee has more National Championships, and Texas has more Heismans and All-Americans, but Tennessee has more SEC titles. What about the head-to-head? The two programs have only faced off three times. Texas was 2-1 against the Vols, but they last played in 1969. Their next matchup is not in 2025 but possibly in 2026. So, who is the real UT? Texas or Tennessee?
