Alabama Crimson Tide you either love them or you hate them. You could be Lynard Skynard singing about Sweet Home Alabama or you are Conner Smith saying how he hates how they yell “Roll Tide” when he's got a Braves hat on his head. However, one thing you can not deny is the Alabama football dominance in college and then their players in the NFL outside of their quarterbacks you see dominate Alabama players in the NFL everyday. However, we are going to look at one position in particular: the running backs, the top 5 Bama running backs of all time.
5. Bobby Humphrey (1985-88)
Humphrey rushed for 3.420 yard and 33 TD’s and when he left he was the Tides single- games, single-season and career rushing leader all time at Alabama until the Saban era happened and that changed quite a bit. It is believed by many that Humphrey would have won Bama’s first Heisman winner had he not had his season cut short by injury. His son Marlon would later star for the Tide on defense and now for the Ravens.
4. Trent Richardson (2009-11)
An absolute bulldozer of a runner in his time in a Tide uniform. Doak Walker award winner rushed for over 3.130 yards and 35 touchdowns over three seasons and was an All-American in 2011 and in 1,679 yards that year and which was the highest in a single season for Alabama until 2015. In the Nationla Champiosnhipp in 2010 he rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns. He would later be drafted 3rd overall by the Cleveland Browns.
3. Shaun Alexander (1996-99)
Alexander finished seventh in the Heisman voting in 1999 for the Tide and lead the nation that year with 23 touchdowns. One of his most noticeable performances was his three touchdown game against the Tiger of Auburn in the Iron Bowl. He is currently still second all time with 3.565 yards rushing and 41 touchdowns in his career with Albama.
2. Derrick Henry (2013-15)
Some will question this ranking but I put Henry at two because of who is at one. Henry does lead all time rushing with shattering many records with the Tide in 2015 in route to his Heisman trophy winning season as well as a SEC and National Championship. King Henry is one of the biggest yet shiftest running backs of all time especially at his size he will go through you or make one move and he is off to the races. He was later drafted 45th overall by the Titans and now plays alongside fellow Heisman winner Lamar Jackson in Batimore with the Ravens.
1. Mark Ingram (2008-10)
Last but not least the first Heisman winner at Alabama had 3,261 yards and 42 touchdowns. He did not start in a single game in his freshman season in 2008 but yet managed more than 700 yards and All-Freshman SEC accolades. His team high touchdowns with 12 also led the Tide; he followed that up with a Heisman win in his sophomore season. He later would go on to be a first round selection of the New Orleans Saints and would also have a nice career as a secondary back in the NFL he now works with FOX in the college football realm.
Alabama has always been one of the universities to produce great running backs, a lot of these guys on this list I got the pleasure to watch in their college career and their pro careers and still watch. Does this make Alabama Running Back U?
