When EA announced in April 2007 that Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young would appear on the cover of Madden NFL 08,  many considered the timing and choice to put a second-year player on the cover of one of the sports most iconic video game franchises too early in his career. But the real tale of Young's rising Madden star features a delicate dance between marketing decisions, football potential, and shifting tides in NFL interpersonal standings, presenting an opportunity for EA Sports to hitch its wagon. This is the story of the circumstances and thinking that informed Young's ill-fated cover selection, its fallout, and how it became a Madden moment for life.

The Quick Ascent of Young to NFL Big-Time

First, let's look at Vince Young's blowup and why EA likely made the call that they did. Young slid to the 3rd overall pick in the 2006 draft after a decorated collegiate career at Texas, headlined by quarterbacking the Longhorns to an upset victory over USC in that season's national championship game. The Titans drafted him in the first round, he signed a lucrative deal, and his rookie season was fantastic.

Young started 13 games for the Titans in 2006, throwing for yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for another three scores. He passed for 2,199 yards and 12 touchdowns, with another seven scores and 552 rushing yards. These plays helped Young win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award and make the Pro Bowl, and he was also named rookie quarterback of the year.

The rookie's flamboyant play in his first few starts quickly made him one of the most talked-about athletes heading into 2007. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts (EA) Sports saw an opening to potentially take advantage of Young and what could be the face of a new wave of stars should such an opportunity present itself.

Previously, EA Sports used the Madden cover to showcase NFL veterans or promote new gameplay elements. Donovan McNabb, Ray Lewis, and Shaun Alexander have all appeared on covers before him. In the case of Madden NFL 08, EA chose a different path.

Vince was the youngest NFL star ever to be placed on the cover of Madden, which allowed developers to reach out to football fans and gamers who were more affiliated from an age perspective with their most successful series. In addition, his charm and the well-publicized tale of a national champion turned NFL Rookie of the Year destined him to be featured in promotional materials and ad advertising campaigns.

Madden 08

After a well-received launch, Madden NFL 08 was a commercial success in August 2007. The games sold over 7 million copies, and the franchise continued its status as one of North America's best-selling video game series. Although it's tough to quantify the effect of Young gracing a cover on sales, the drama undoubtedly drove further attention toward the game.

After appearing on the Madden cover, Young had a bumpy NFL career. Despite showing signs of promise and guiding the Titans to a postseason berth in 2007, inconsistent play and some off-the-field incidents ultimately led Young out of Tennessee. Young bounced from team to team as a backup and retired in 2014, not quite showing the superstar-caliber promise that his Madden cover had seemed to forecast.

Retrospective and Legacy Analysis

In hindsight, placing Vince Young on the Madden 08 cover was branded as both a daring marketing ploy and representative of an NFL that was changing quickly in its time. Rather than going with an older, big-name talent, EA showcased a young and exciting player, hinting at the idea that they were looking outside of their comfort zones to appeal to new fans while adjusting to how football is played today.

Even though he was a bust of massive proportions, taking Young in 2007 wasn't the worst idea. Such hype was well merited, as he had a great rookie season and epitomized the brand of mobile quarterback that would heavily influence NFL trends in the following years.

The backlash after Young's selection also underscored how entrenched Madden had become within its community and as a cultural touchstone. The sports gaming world was embroiled in a yearly cover athlete debate showcasing the immensity of Madden's impact on football fandom.

With the Madden franchise moving into new eras on an annual basis, the Vince Young cover stands out as a chapter in its own right when it comes to taking gambles and witnessing talent that is both brilliant and still young with video games, including all associated history of what can happen for up-and-coming stars.
