Going into week 14, Josh Allen was leading most of the sportsbooks MVP odds. Despite losing 44-42 to the Rams, Allen's massive statistical performance may have secured him the award.
In the loss, Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw three touchdowns and rush for three touchdowns in the same game. He also threw for 342 yards, completed 22 of 37 passes and rushed for 82 yards. Allen was a one man show, accounting for all 42 of the Bills points.
Although it is his third loss of the season, it is hard to pin the blame for the loss on Allen, who did all he could to carry the offense. The Bills defense should not prevent Allen from winning the MVP, should it?
There is still the question of Lamar Jackson, who beat the Bills head-to-head and boasts the league's best passer rating, TD:TO ratio and is second in completion percentage. Jackson has a strong case, but a few factors could point to Allen over Jackson for the prestigious award.
First, Allen has a better record. Despite losing to the Ravens, the Bills are 10-3, as opposed to the Ravens who are 8-5. While record is not all that matters, the Bills have the better record, and the Ravens are fighting for a wild card spot while the Bills have already locked up the AFC North.
Second, Allen is the only QB this year to beat the Chiefs. That could matter to MVP voters, who understand that the Chiefs are the class of the NFL. Beating Kansas City is perhaps the most difficult thing to do in the NFL, and Allen did just that, which boosts his resume and his MVP case.
The MVP race may not be finished yet, but Allen sure added to his argument with his stellar game on Sunday. The Bills still have two games remaining against the last place Patriots, meaning Allen will have more opportunities to have big games. If he can beat up on New England and add to his already strong statline, the MVP award might just be his to lose.
