After going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, Carl Granderson's chances of making it at the NFL level were slim. After all, even players who are drafted often struggle to make it as professionals, However, Granderson was not to be dissuaded and signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints, determined to use that proverbial chip on his shoulder to separate himself from the pack.
Prior to the draft, it was certainly an impressive college career for Granderson at Wyoming. A standout for the Cowboys, he accumulated 172 total tackles, 35.5 TFL's (tackles for loss) and added 17.5 sacks in his career. In 2018, his senior year was statistically one of the stronger all around seasons in college football, amazing 40 tackles (7.5 TFL), and three sacks being displaced in only six contests. Due to this production, even after going undrafted, the Saints believed Granderson could be more than just a productive college pass rusher.
Granderson seized his chance in New Orleans immediately, grinding for both a roster spot and prove those who doubted him wrong. Finally, in 2022, it all came together for Granderson. Playing in all 16 games and starting in 4, Granderson posted a personal-best of seven solo stops and also registered his first sack - which was one half-sack shy from Malik Reed for the fourth-highest total on the team.
In fact, Granderson's impact didn't stop on the field. Reaches well beyond the gridiron in becoming a revered member of community. Known for his infectious positivity and true commitment to creating change in the world, he has made numerous visits to local schools, hospitals and community centers, sharing his story with the young people in hopes of encouraging and inspiring them to follow their dreams.
Recently, the Saints gave Granderson a contract extension, not only locking in an impact player who has become a jack-of-all-trades for the defense, but also confirming Granderson's message that as long as you follow your dreams, the sky is the limit. For Granderson, however, the money and accolades play second fiddle to his love of the game and chance as a player also use his platform for good.
"Football has always been my passion, but it's the opportunity to motivate others and help out in the community that truly thrives me," Granderson said. " I'm thankful for every second that I get to wear a Saints uniform and play in this great city. It's a situation that goes beyond my job — it is an opportunity to create change."
Granderson even takes his talents beyond simply the football field and inspiring the youth. He has his own social media account called 'Grub with Grando', and the page simply follows him around food spots or in his own kitchen showing off his cooking skills. Granderson's gourmet burgers and decadent desserts are sometimes even more impressive than his athletic feats.
Granderson's career is only up from here, but his story is evidence that with some hard work and a dream, you can not only change your life but an entire community.
