Mac Attack: Why Florida Gators freshman Chris McClellan will be a problem for opposing teams

The Florida Gators’ defensive line got a huge boost this season with the arrival of freshman sensation Chris McClellan. The 6-foot-4, 295-lb. defensive tackle was a wanted recruit out of high school, receiving offers from other powerhouse programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC, among others.

Good thing he chose the Sun Shine State, making a lot of Gators fans giddy with excitement.

Here’s how good Chris McClellan is. The Fan Arch athlete was ranked as the No. 2 recruit in the state of Oklahoma by 247Sports Composite Rankings, and a four-star recruit by 247Sports Composite.

In his senior season for Owasso High School, Chris McClellan posted 46 tackles, five sacks, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble, and two batted passes. He was also selected for the 2022 All-American Bowl Game.

Chris Hummer of 247Sports recently included Chris McClellan in his list of 100 true freshmen who matter. Here’s how he described the Gators’ new star defensive back.

“Chris McClellan arrived at Florida with college-ready size and that showed in spring ball. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound interior lineman looked like someone who could contribute in the SEC right away, which is huge for a Gators program in need of depth along the defensive interior (and still looking for help in the portal). Look for McClellan to be in the rotation at defensive tackle behind Gervon Dexter.”

The Gators, meanwhile, are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2021 season and once again assert themselves as one of the best football programs in the country. Chris McClellan is expected to have a big impact right away, particularly with Florida State’s lagging defense.

Apart from his tall, big frame and NFL-ready build, Chris McClellan also has very good length for his position, which could come in handy.

He will be joined by another defensive standout, Jamari Lyons, and is expected to create a formidable duo for the Gators’ interior moving forward. Watch out Gators fans. The cavalry has arrived, and Chris McClellan is at the forefront of it all.
