How many national championships does the Washington Huskies have?

There is a long and storied tradition for the Washington Huskies football that stretches back to the early 1900s. This history is celebrated on the wall inside Husky Stadium, as Washington has ascended to one of the top programs in its league over the course of several decades with conference championships and bowl appearances.

As for national championships, the Huskies own two of those. One was when the team ended its season in 1960, with a mark of 10-1, the Huskies were voted national champion by the Football Writers Association of America. They obtained their second in 1991, when they were voted No. 1 by the Associated Press and Coaches Polls after going undefeated (12-0).

Although not as high as some of the other traditional powers, two national championships are certainly nothing to scoff at when you put it into perspective with how respected and admired elite programs such are, including Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Texas and UCLA. The team has won a total of two national championships, 17 conference titles, and has made 39 bowl game appearances.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Washington's on-field success is that its commitment to excellence extends well beyond what happens between the lines. He is known for success in the Associated, where his players have excelled, and many Ducks went on to pro careers after leaving Washington. Washington also really emphasizes community service and giving back to the Seattle area.

The Huskies have benefitted greatly from bowl appearances during the years for both improving its profile and raising recruiting expectations. The most important aspect of any bowl game is that it allows two teams to present themselves on a national stage, and an encouraging showing in one of the more prestigious bowls can lead some top players to join your team from other parts. In their history, the Huskies have made some notable bowl game appearances, such as in the 1985 Orange Bowl, where they beat Oklahoma Sooners 28–17.

So, in the end, while Washington may not have as many national championships as some of their rivals do overall, they are still one of the most successful programs around and win a lot, but with class. The Huskies are one of the most dominant programs in college football history, having won two national championships and 17 conference titles while making bowl games a staggering 39 times. And, with an emphasis on academic performance and community service, the best is yet to come for years down the road.
