The Atlanta Falcons have been on quite a quarterback conundrum since Matt Ryan left the team. They have not quite been able to redeem themselves after giving up an 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. However, it seems like Arthur Blank and the front office may have just solved this problem through acquiring both Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins.
Look, it’s easy to scratch one’s head because of how the Falcons offseason went. They now have two high-caliber quarterbacks who are capable of leading a franchise. One has the veteran acumen and experience in Kirk Cousins while the other has just shown that he has the legs to lift up a college football program in Michael Penix Jr. The signal caller battle along with the mentorship are going to be insane in the Falcons training camp.
However, it looks like Arthur Blank and the rest of the Falcons have made up their mind. They are going to have Cousins run the signal caller spot for the foreseeable future, via Kevin Patra of the NFL.
"Kirk Cousins is our franchise quarterback, is our starting quarterback and he seems to be doing great from a medical standpoint. His attitude, his leadership, culturally, personally, with our players, with the coaching staff, has been nothing short of outstanding. So, we couldn't be happier with that situation,” he declared.
It is worth noting that Cousins could not quite make a big impact in his final year with Justin Jefferson in the Minnesota Vikings system. He suffered an Achilles tear which could still also put the Falcons in jeopardy once the pain resurfaces.
However, this does not worry Blank because of well they managed themselves in free agency and in the draft.
“We've been through a situation, post-Matt Ryan, when we're seeing that movie when we didn't have a franchise quarterback. We didn't want to repeat that again. I mean, I certainly didn't. I'm super sensitive to all forms of succession planning. After 60-odd years of business, in any business, that's critical. At the key position, the quarterback position in the NFL, that's very important. So, just listening to our coaching staff and our personnel department, they really made the decision. Michael was going to be available at number eight. They saw an extraordinary talent,” he declared.
