The New York Giants have released their quarterback and former first-round pick Daniel Jones after six seasons together. Their time together wasn’t a successful one as Jones only made one playoff appearance for the team in 2022.
The Giants drafted Jones out of Duke University with the sixth overall pick in 2019. Jones had big shoes to fill as he was seen as the successor to NY Giants legend Eli Manning.
Despite his struggles in his later years, Giants fandom view Manning as their greatest quarterback in franchise history as he led the team to two Super Bowl victories, both against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Jones was hyped as the next Eli for New York, but in the end all there end up being was just disappointment.
In his six seasons with New York, Jones amassed a record of 24-44-1 in 69 career starts. In that time, he threw 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions with 14,582 passing yards. He career qb rating is 84.3
Jones’ most successful season with the team came in 2022. He led the Giants to a 9-6-1 record in 16 starts that season.
The Giants finished the year with a total record of 9-7-1 and clinched a playoff appearance for the first time since 2016. Jones even won a playoff game for team, defeating the Minnesota Vikings in the wild card round 31-24.
New York’s playoff run would come to an end the very next week in the divisional round against the Philadelphia Eagles, losing to their rivals 38-7.
That season, Jones had a career year in terms of statistics. He threw for a career high 3,205 passing yards with 15 passing touchdowns and only five interceptions. He also ran for 708 yards and had seven rushing touchdowns.
The Giants were so impressed with Jones that they gave him a four-year $160 million extension. However in the last two seasons, Jones hasn’t lived up to that contract.
In 2023 Jones missed most of the season due to injuries to his neck and knee and this year he has struggled mightily for the Giants.
In 16 combined starts over the last two seasons, Jones has accumulated a record of 3-13 and the Giants haven’t even come close to the playoffs.
Jones’ underwhelming has put his head coach Brian Daboll on the hot seat, two years removed from his 2022 AP NFL Coach of the Year award win.
The Giants finally had enough of Jones and have been benched in favor of second year quarterback Tommy Devito.
Per mutual agreement, the Giants officially released Jones and are looking for their next franchise quarterback.
His release is going to hurt the Giants for a few years to come. Because of his release, the Giants now have to pay the rest of Jones’ contract and will have a cap hit of $22 million next season.
It makes people wonder if that contract with Jones should’ve gone to a more well-deserving player like Saquon Barkley instead.
