Why Cam Ward Had No Offers

Miami, FL—Cam Ward was debating entering the 2024 draft before deciding to transfer to Miami (FL). Now, Ward is leading an undefeated Miami team and could be the top quarterback taken in this year's draft. However, the road for Ward has not been easy since he had no offers coming out of high school. "One offer could change your life," Ward said in an interview with College Gameday. "It did mine."
Cam Ward was an unranked quarterback prospect born in Lake Jackson, Texas. Ward threw for 1.070 passing yards in his junior season, and in his senior season, he only attempted 12 pass attempts due to his high school running a Wing T offense. Ward committed to his only offer, FCS Incarnate Word, during the spring COVID season. Ward threw 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns in six games and won the Jerry Rice Award for the most outstanding freshman in the FCS. In his sophomore year, he had 4,648 passing yards and 47 touchdowns. Wanting to prove he could compete at the FBS level and Power 5 level, he transferred to PAC 12 and Washington State.
Washington State (Wazzu) had a high-air attack offense in the Mike Leach era. Now, under former Interm turned head coach Jake Dickert, Ward was a perfect fit in Pullman.
Ward went to Wazzu, and in his first season, he threw for 3,231 yards and 23 touchdowns while also rushing for five touchdowns, making him an all-around dual-threat quarterback. Ward also upset ranked Wisconsin in 2022 with the Cougars. Then, in 2023, Ward would throw for 3,735 yards, 25 touchdowns, and a career-high eight rushing touchdowns. Then, it came time to decide whether to stay one more year in college or enter the draft.
Ward entered the draft VIA X (formerly Twitter). When deciding whether to go pro or come back one more season, Ward visited the U. Not long after, Head Coach Mario Cristobal got a FaceTime call from Ward saying he wanted to be a Miami Hurricane. Ward spent the offseason in Miami and even worked out with Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones, Colorado quarterback Sheduer Sanders, and Select QB Athletics founder Darell Colbert Jr. Video posted by Well Off Media has shown some of the things Ward was practicing certain throws then seeing him complete them in the games the Hurricanes have played in this season.
Ward received a draft grade that would land him on Day two or three of the draft, and he said, "I took it. Personally, I wake up every day thinking I'm the S***; I wake up and tell myself I am the best player in the country every day and I stand by that." in his interview with College Gameday earlier this year and his numbers indeed prove that. Ward is second in the country in passing yards and touchdowns, trailing North Texas QB Chandler Morris.
Keep an eye on Ward as the Hurricanes are at home against Duke this weekend. Don't be surprised if you see his name as one of, if not the first quarterbacks, taken in the NFL Draft in April.
