Prior to 1982, only the winner of the Heisman Trophy was invited to attend the annual Heisman ceremony held in New York City each December. It wasn't until 1982 when the Heisman Trophy Trust began inviting multiple finalists to the ceremony. Since then, there have been a total of 141 finalists, including the four finalists for the 2023 Heisman Trophy.
The number of Heisman finalists varies from year to year, but there will always be at least three finalists invited to the ceremony in a given year.
