Scholarships are one of the things we constantly hear about when the conversation turns to college sports. These are the scholarships that provide student-athletes with a package of financial aid to attend college and compete in sports at their school. The truth is that not all D1 scholarships are full rides.
What is a full ride scholarship excatly? It helps you cover the cost of your education and boarding and any other expenses. They are rare scholarships given only to the best athletes in any sport.
Some other sports, such as baseball and softball, are considered "equivalency" sports. In other words, a coach can be limited to his allotment of scholarships. For example, in baseball, a coach has 11.7 scholarships to divide among his players. They have the option of giving a full ride to one athlete or splitting scholarships up among multiple athletes.
Given that, what do student-athletes receive from scholarship offers since not all D1 scholarships are full rides? It varies from sport to sport and depends upon that particular athlete's skill level.
Partial scholarships are more common for athletes who do not sit at the very top of their sport. While these scholarships provide varying amounts of tuition, room and board, or other expenses to attend each university you apply for, they do not cover attendance costs in full. More costly programs can be paid through grants or loans but will result in student-athletes needing to cover the costs of other financial aid.
Nevertheless, partial scholarships are still substantial assistance. They might enable student-athletes to attend college and compete at a high level, while also minimizing the debt they will have when they graduate.
Scholarships are not the only factors to consider; remember that a coach will recruit its student-athletes. Coaches share the new criteria for their future crewmembers—leadership skills are at a premium, as is work ethic, as well as how you can give back to your team or university.
Student-athletes who are academically inclined can distinguish themselves in the recruiting process as well as with their hard-earned grades. While far from the only variable coaches are looking at, they offer a window into whether he or she is committed enough to his or her education and fit enough with how the lives of an athlete can correlate with athletics.
It is also very important to look into colleges when choosing where to apply, student-athletes should consider the school's location, academic programs, and athletic infrastructure.
Finally, the student-athlete should evaluate carefully, while a full ride might appear to be the best offer on paper, one must also consider other aspects, such as the team's competitive level at an international scale and the quality of coaching staff or even skill acquisition opportunities in different areas that some universities may afford alongside academic programs beyond athletics.
While everyone always wants a full-ride scholarship, it is not a reality in Division 1 athletics. D1 offers some of the fewest scholarships, especially considering that the majority are partial scholarships that only pay for some costs. Partial scholarships are better than nothing. By creating a complete athletic profile, achieving solid academic success, looking into the schools, and assessing scholarship offers carefully, student-athletes will put themselves in a much better position to receive an offer of their own and find the right place for them both as college students and athletes.
