ABOUT Boxing
The Marquess of Queensberry Rules are the rules that regulate modern boxing. The rules were written by John Graham Chambers and were published in 1867. The rules were endorsed and named after John Douglas or the 9th Marquess of Queensberry.
The first ever heavyweight champion under Queensberry rules was John L. Sullivan from Roxbury Massachusetts. Nicknamed Boston Strong Boy, Sullivan was also the first ever lineal heavyweight champion.
Sanctioning Bodies
The World Boxing Association (WBA)
The World Boxing Association was founded in 1923 under the name National Boxing Association. Their first organized fight took place in 1921 Jack Dempsey vs. Georges Carpentier. In 1962 the NBA became the WBA. Its headquarters is in Panama City, Panama.
The World Boxing Council (WBC)
The World Boxing Council was founded in 1963. It has 11 founding countries. United States, Argentina, United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Tunisia, the Philippines, Panama, Russia, Chile, Peru, Venezuela and Brazil. As of 2024, the WBC has 161 member countries, all 161 countries are featured on the WBC belt. The WBC belt is considered the most prestigious. The WBC Headquarters is located in Mexico City, Mexico.
The International Boxing Federation (IBF)
The International Boxing Federation was founded in 1983. Marvin Camel was the first ever IBF champion in 1983. In 1984, Larry Holmes became IBF heavyweight champion and vacated his WBC belt to accept IBF champion status. This signaled the IBF as the third sanctioning body. The IBF Headquarters is located in Springfield, New Jersey.
The World Boxing Organization (WBO)
The WBO was founded in 1988. The first ever WBO champion was Thomas Hearns for the super middleweight title. The WBO struggled the most to be considered a legitimate sanctioning body but champions such as Oscar De La Hoya and Wladmir Klitschko popularized the WBO belt in the early 2000s. The WBO Headquarters is located in San Juan Puerto Rico.
Lineal Champions
The lineal champion is known as the man who beat the man. A fighter who beats the lineal champion in a given weight class becomes that weight class's lineal champion. The lineal championship shows who the best in the division is. Which is hard to distinguish in the four belt era.
