Canelo Alvarez is looking at options for his next opponent's upcoming fight in May of 2025. A move back to light heavyweight appears to be an option. Canelo is 1-1 at 175 pounds with a knockout win over Sergey Kovalev and a unanimous decision loss to Dmitri Bivol.
Canelo seeks to avenge his loss to Bivol but
his original plan was to always become undisputed at light heavyweight, a title that currently belongs to Beterbiev.
"I give Canelo a shot against Beterbiev because of the pace. Beterbiev fights at a pretty slow clip these days. But at a slower pace, Canelo is really good at that and his defense is good enough and his counter punching. He’ll get your respect. He does have a good jab Canelo. He has a very underrated jab.” Chris Algeri stated on Inside Boxing Live.
Algeri noted that he still believes Beterbiev wins that fight but still gives a strong case for Canelo to win that fight.
Bivol actually had a lot easier time landing punches against Beterbiev at a 33.6% clip compared to 21.4% against Canelo. Alvarez may be considered a slow boxer, but his defense has always been one of the most underrated parts of his game. Not a lot of fighters can hit Canelo never mind hurt him. Stylistically, Canelo is a very tough opponent for Beterbiev.
Bivol vs Beterbiev 2 is a fight boxing fans want to see. A rematch is a necessity when a fight ends in controversy. Nonetheless, Canelo Alvarez is the biggest star in the sport and the most lucrative fight for Beterbiev. Beterbiev should capitalize on that while he can.
Dmitri Bivol’s comparison of his two former opponents has increased interest in a potential fight for Canelo vs Beterbiev.
“All punches in the combination are heavy. I could compare with Canelo. He put all his energy, all his power on the single punch. Maybe sometimes the single is punch hits harder Canelo than Beterbiev.” Bivol stated on Fight Hub TV.
Bivol stating that Canelo has more power in a single punch than Beterbiev is a surprise to many. Beterbiev has 20 knockouts in 21 professional fights. Yet Canelo’s power in a single shot is devastating to fighters and has deadly accuracy.
As Canelo continues to negotiate his next opponent, he should look no further than Beterbiev, a massive challenge and a legacy-defining fight. It also is the most lucrative fight for Beterbiev, as his options after becoming undisputed are endless. Canelo vs Beterbiev is a great fight for boxing. In May of 2025, it should happen.
