Canelo Alvarez has been eyeing a move to light heavyweight in 2025. Canelo has cleared out the 168 pound division, has beaten everybody and it was clear he desired the winner of Bivol vs Beterbiev.
"When I spoke to Canelo yesterday, he says he wants Dmitri Bivol next" Mike Coppinger stated on ESPN's State of Boxing last month. Alvarez lost to Bivol in 2022 and has been adamant about avenging that loss. He also stated his interest in a fight with Artur Beterbiev if he beat Bivol. Canelo has always had the goal of being a two division undisputed champion.
A month later, Beterbiev defeated Bivol to become the undisputed champion of the light heavyweight division. However, it was in controversial fashion, Beterbiev won a Majority decision and many in boxing believe the rightful winner was Dmitri Bivol.
A rematch appears to be inevitable which is bad news for Canelo Alvarez. Historically, Alvarez likes to be active and fight at least twice a year. He is expected to fight in May of 2025. The problem is, there may not be a suitable opponent.
David Benavidez will be fighting David Morell at the end of January, Bivol and Beterbiev are tied up in a rematch and there is nobody left for Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds.
“For the first time I am starting to think this Crawford Canelo fight is starting to look possible.” Chris Algeri stated on his Podcast Inside Boxing Live.
Like Canelo, Crawford is also seeking an opponent and has been publicly asking for a dream fight with Canelo Alvarez, that would certainly be the biggest pay day of Crawford’s career. The fight makes sense but has not interested in Canelo because Crawford has fought in three weight classes below. However, Canelo vs Crawford may be the biggest fight that Canelo can make in 2025, which may interest him in making the fight happen.
Boxing used to have great fighters like Sugar Ray Leonard go up multiple weight classes after several years away from the sport to face unbeatable champions like Marvin Hagler. Let Terence Crawford dare to be great. Styles make fights, and Canelo vs Crawford is an exciting and massive opportunity to have the two most prominent fighters of their era clash in the ring.
Canelo Alvarez is poised to move to light heavyweight in 2025, seeking to avenge his previous loss to Dmitri Bivol, but with limited options available, a potential matchup against Terence Crawford may emerge as the most significant fight for him. This clash could not only provide a substantial payday for Crawford but also represent a historic opportunity for both fighters to solidify their legacies.
