2024 has been another strong year for Canelo Alvarez. In May, Canelo Alvarez defeated Jaime Munguía on Cinco De Mayo Weekend to retain his status as undisputed super middleweight champion. In September, Alvarez defeated Edgar Berlanga during the Mexican Independence Weekend.
"Canelo has been really good at recently fighting these bigger younger guys." former boxer turned analyst Chris Algeri stated on ProBox TV.
Still, boxing fans have been desperate to see Canelo Alvarez get in the ring with David Benavidez. With Alvarez's likely next fight targeted for May, the fight everyone wants to see is Alvarez vs Benavidez. This potential match-up has been a hot topic in the boxing world, with fans and analysts speculating on the outcome.
The fight does not seem to interest Canelo, as he has reportedly stated he wants $200 million to fight David Benavidez. This demand, which some consider exorbitant, reflects Alvarez's desire for significant compensation for what he sees as a high-stakes fight. It has also led to criticism from the boxing community that he is avoiding Benavidez.
Alvarez has his eyes on bigger challenges.
"When I spoke to Canelo yesterday, he says he wants Dmitri Bivol next" Mike Coppinger stated on ESPN's State of Boxing prior to Canelo's fight with Berlagna.
Bivol is the last man to defeat Alvarez, a loss that Canelo is determined to avenge. However, Bivol is scheduled to fight Artur Beterbiev on October 12th for the undisputed title at light heavyweight.
It appears Alvarez would like to face the winner of that fight. In an interview with KO Artist Sports, Alvarez stated that Beterbiev is a bigger challenge for him than Benavidez.
"Oh, Beterbiev, yeah, of course. He's a champion. He has something to offer me. He's strong; he's in another weight."
Canelo had set his sights on becoming the undisputed light heavyweight and the first two-division undisputed champion in the four-belt era. However, Bivol foiled those plans. Since then, Terence Crawford and Oleksandr Usyk have gone on to become two-division undisputed champions.
After nearly 20 years of professional boxing and 66 fights, Canelo is acutely aware that his career is winding down. A move to light heavyweight would significantly enhance his legacy.
"If we need to do some fight. He doesn't need to talk with the media. He needs to talk with Eddie Hearn." Bivol told reporters when asked about Canelo's call for a rematch.
Whether you want to see Alvarez in the ring with Bendavidez or not, it is hard to say he is avoiding tough challenges. Bivol and Beterbiev are two of the toughest fighters on the planet. It will be interesting to see Canelo move up to light heavyweight once more. It appears he has accomplished everything he can at super middleweight. It will be exciting to see what the king of boxing will do next.
