In a truly shocking turn of events, Daniel Dubois obliterated Anthony Joshua to defend his IBF heavyweight title.
Dubois's performance was nothing short of dominant. He knocked down Joshua four times in rounds one, three, and four, before delivering a knockout blow in round five.
"Joshua never stopped trying; that is one thing you got to give him credit for.' boxing analyst Paulie Malignaggi told viewers of his YouTube channel.
Joshua showed a lot of heart during this fight, but he did not show much else. Dubois looked phenomenal in the ring at Wembley, but Joshua looked flat. It was the perfect storm.
" I would just like to say, me and my team have received a lot of credit for good performances that he's had, so it is important that we take responsibility for the bad performance as well." Joshua's trainer, Ben Davidson, told reporters following his fighter's knockout loss.
After seventeen years, a Gold Medal at the 2012 Olympics, 32 professional fights, and two heavyweight title runs, it is fair to wonder if this is the end for Anthony Joshua.
"What a roller coaster journey, but you know what the problem is. It is far from over yet. We have done it once. We have done it twice. Doing it a third time has not been easy, but I believe it is something I can achieve." Joshua told his fans in a video statement this week.
What could be next for Anthony Joshua? The public has always demanded a fight with Tyson Fury. They have been generational rivals, the faces of British boxing, and polar opposites in every way.
"Listen, that cost me 150 million!" Tyson Fury screamed following Joshua's loss to Daniel Dubois. Signaling he may not be interested in a match with Anthony Joshua. Nonetheless, if Oleksandr Usyk defeats Fury in their rematch in December, Fury's best option may be a clash with AJ.
Money fights will always be there with Anthony Joshua. He is a household name. Fights with Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder is something boxing fans have dreamt of for nearly a decade. But will he be able to compete for the title?
Dubois has discussed a potential rematch with Anthony Joshua, telling TalkSport, "I want to do even better next time." A rematch could be a chance for Joshua to redeem himself. Dubois's promoter, Frank Warren, has also told TalkSport he is open to a second fight between Joshua and Dubois.
Anthony Joshua is one of the biggest names in boxing, and as long as he continues to be a household name, he will get big fights. He is the biggest money fight in the heavyweight division. He was the A-side of an event that broke the attendance record for British boxing last week.
Frank Warren and Daniel Dubois definitely want to put on another spectacle like that again.Whether it is Fury, Wilder, or Dubois, people will tune in to watch Anthony Joshua fight. The question is, how will AJ come back from this? Time will tell.
