The Life of George Foreman was a story of everyone mind, revealing character, self-reflection, and the opportunity to make millions of dollars outside the ring.
From his humble beginnings in Marshall, Texas to his transformation into a two-time heavyweight boxing world champion and ultimately to a successful entrepreneur selling the George Foreman Grill, his story is an amazing and motivating story of victory both in the ring and in the marketplace.
Early Life and Boxing Career
Born George Edward Foreman on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman had a tough upbringing in the rough Fifth Ward area of Houston.
Life was tough for Boykins, who was born in Dallas but grew up in Memphis and Houston and got into street gangs at a very young age, which led him to Job Corps in 1965.
The program put him on the boxing path that would eventually make his career in the ring so legendary. The gold medal in the heavyweight boxing division at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City was the culmination of his swift ascent in the boxing world.
Foreman's boxing career included his epic victory over Joe Frazier in 1973 to secure the world heavyweight title.
That defeat to Muhammad Ali in 1974 was the beginning of a spiritual awakening that would alter the course of his life and career.
Upon leaving his boxing career, he reinvented himself as a born again Christian whilst also helping out in the fight against youth drug problems by establishing the George Foreman Youth and Community Center in 1984.
Move to the Entrepreneur World
Foreman found he had a flair for selling in the early '90s a gift that, he says, steered him from a boxing comeback to his other career as a business mogul.
The George Foreman Grill his first commercial is the schilling of the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine on the market in 1994.
The George Foreman Grill Fad
He would end the decade by selling more than 100 million units of The George Foreman Grill around the world.
The marketing and promotion of the product was a key to its popularity and commercial success, with Foreman lending his name to an evolving series of products and their promotions including the Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine.
In fact, they reportedly generated 40 cents for every grill sold, earning a remarkable sum that year totaling more than his prize earnings from his iconic boxing career when he sold the naming rights to use his moniker to Salton, Inc.
Foreman's Legacy and Impact
In addition to his boxing and business achievements, Foreman's ministry, charity work, and family life all contribute to a complex legacy beyond the ring.
A lasting figure in both sports and business, his reach extends far beyond the ring. To this day, the existence of the George Foreman Grill and Foreman's success story gives the hope a lot of people from many different walks of life.
The path George Foreman traveled, from heavyweight champion to kitchen appliance salesman is a testament to his determination.
