Bernadette Robi was born in the US on April 18, 1958. She is maritally descended from a musical family. Her father was Paul Robi, one of the original singers in The Platters. Unfortunately, though, Paul breathed his last in Los Angeles on February 1, 1989. In her biography, Bernadette Robi Mentions that not much is known about her mother, Marth Robi since she hardly appears in the limelight.
The only child of her parents, Bernadette must have had an unconventional childhood and, more than likely, one greatly influenced by a music-loving dad. Given what we know about her background, growing up in an environment where the entertainment industry would be no stranger to us as children could have been one of many factors that we were attractively drawn towards and came comfortably for us before long.
Career as a Model
By the time she was recognized as Sugar Ray Leonard's wife, Bernadette Robi had already made a name for herself in modeling. As a Sports Swimsuit model, she flaunts her beauty and grace in numerous publications. Not much is known about her career as a model, but Robi had been involved in the fashion world before she met Leonard.
But thanks to her time in the modeling world, she was probably more well-prepped for life as a boxing legend's wife than most. It also speaks about her ever-growing success rate and individuality outside of Leonard.
Meeting Sugar Ray Leonard
Their first meeting took place at the Luther Vandross concert in 1989. Robi was there to see Kenny G, the famous saxophonist who is also his girlfriend. Kenny G saw Sugar Ray at the event and yelled at him, asking if he was married and saying Bernadette wanted to meet.
They met while still newly untangled from their prior marriages. Robi was married to former football player Lynn Swann from 1979-1983. Leonard, meanwhile, divorced his first wife, Juanita Wilkinson, in December 1990 after over ten years together.
The Blossoming Romance
Robi and Leonard first met at the concert before they started dating. Over the next four years, their relationship deepened. In her caption, Robi, who noted that Sugar Ray is the toughest of guys in the boxing realm, said it was probably his gentle nature and "soft" side that she has seen many times off-camera. She described the former boxer as having "a massive heart and down to earth."
From this prolonged courtship, they laid what Coach Flanigan described as "a good, strong foundation for their relationship," far removed from the harsh glare that had occupied Leonard throughout his boxing lifetime. They got to have that personal time between them and build up a connection that would last for years beyond.
Marriage to Sugar Ray Leonard
On August 20, 1993, Bernadette Robi and Sugar Ray Leonard married after almost four years of dating. Their wedding was the start of a decades-long partnership that endures to this day.
They have been together since 2006, and it is the only testimony to their strong affection towards one another and the many highs and downs in personal life accompanying a public relationship.
Family Life
Bernadette and Sugar Ray have a lovely family. They have two children: a daughter, Camille Leonard (born in 1997), and a son, Daniel Ray Leonard, born in 2000. The stunning 19-year-old has followed in her mom's modeling footsteps. She is also an established social media personality and businesswoman.
Preserving the Legacy of Sugar Ray Leonard
Living the life of a boxing legend's wife has allowed Bernadette Robi to be front and center throughout his career and to help preserve Sugar Ray Leonard's great legacy. She was constantly by his side, accompanying her husband at different boxing halls and brawls.
More than anything, one of the greatest things Robi has done for Leonard's habitat is being associated with the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation. The foundation launched in 2009 with a mission to promote awareness about childhood obesity and type 1 and 2 diabetes. Robi volunteers as the director of the foundation alongside her husband to encourage healthier children with good nutrition and exercise habits and support diabetes research.
Life Beyond the Spotlight
Although Bernadette Robi is most famous for her connection to Sugar Ray Leonard, she has more identity and work apart from it. However, she has listed herself as a businesswoman in her Instagram bio, which means that as well as being a celebrity wife, she might also be doing better professionally.
Robi has managed to keep several things about her personal life off the record. She's operated with such discretion that surely it's one reason her marriage is still strong. It tells the story of a woman who wants to remain in control and for whom image is important. She has since made her Instagram private.
Long-Lasting Relationship
