Alex Pereira made history at UFC 307 with three title defenses in just 175 days. This breaks Ronda Rousey's record for the fewest days between title defenses (189 days). Pereira's third title defense is tied to Islam Makhachev, who has the most title defenses among active champions.
This was not an easy fight for Pereira. Khalil Rountree was a formidable opponent who dropped the champion in round two. He was actually ahead on all three judges' scorecards heading into round 4. However, Alex Pereira broke down Khalil Rountree in round 4, landing 92 strikes to Rountree's 15, and earned the TKO win in the final seconds of round 4.Rountree showed a lot of heart and toughness and earned the respect of everyone who watched the fight. Prior to the fight, Rountree expressed how this fight was for the fans. Rountree and Pereira delivered a performance fans will remember forever.
The question after the fight is what is next for both of these fighters? Will Alex Pereria become the first champion to defend his belt four times in a calendar year? Not so fast.
"I think I earned and deserve some rest after this. I'm not gonna say what, but this was one of the hardest camps for me to do due to things happening throughout the camp." Pereira stated in an interview with ESPN following his 4th round TKO win.
It was later revealed that Poatan dealt with the flu and Visa issues weeks befoe the fight. Still, he hinted at what he wants to do in the future.
“If the UFC wants to please me, I think maybe a fight at heavyweight one day would be something that would really please me.” Alex Pereira told reporters following UFC 307.
The opportunity for Peirera to contend in a third weight class and pursue becoming the first-ever is something the MMA world would love to watch. It would give r Peirera the opportunity to make history and become the greatest fighter in UFC history.
"What this guy has done is unbelievable. The way he has done it I mean this guy destroys everybody." Dana White stated at the UFC 307 post-fight press conference.
I would not be surprised to see Pereira move up to heavyweight after Tom Aspinall vs Jon Jones happens. As for Rountree, he has earned an opportunity to face top contenders such as Jamaal Hill to get back into the conversation for a title.
Alex Pereira's remarkable achievement of three title defenses in just 175 days not only sets a new record but also highlights his resilience in overcoming significant challenges during his latest fight. He consistently amazes. Meanwhile, Khalil Rountree's commendable performance has positioned him for potential matchups with top contenders, ensuring that both fighters remain prominent figures in the UFC landscape.
