Conor McGregor has teased his return fight once again following the latest BKFC event, this time providing details on his next opponent.
“February 1st in Saudi Arabia, Dan Hooker”- Conor McGregor told Bloody Elbow when asked about his next fight.
Hooker's name has been mentioned as a possibility for McGregor's next opponent following Michael Chandler fighting at UFC 309 in November.
Dan Hooker is one of the most exciting fighters in MMA. The #5 ranked lightweight is the perfect opponent for McGregor’s return. Dan Hooker is a high-profile name. If McGregor can beat Hooker, he can establish himself as a contender for the lightweight title and get bigger and more high-profile fights. He is an ideal candidate for McGregor's next opponent.
“I’m on board. He’s on board. We just need to get the UFC on board and we’ll get this thing across the line,”- Dan Hooker told Submission Radio in response to the McGregor fight.
What Conor McGregor needs most out of his return fight is a win. Dan Hooker is a top-five-ranked lightweight that McGregor can beat. Hooker has 12 losses in his career and has been caught a couple of times in recent years by Michael Chandler and Arnold Allen. If McGregor is anywhere close to what he was in 2021, it is reasonable to expect him to secure his second victory since 2016. Dan Hooker makes a ton of sense for Conor McGregor.
Where does that leave Michael Chandler? Chandler and McGregor were announced as the coaches for Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter. There was a lot of build-up and a scheduled date and tickets sold for June 29th, 2024. Chandler has made it clear he still intends to fight McGregor following his UFC 309 rematch with Charles Olivera.
"Conor is a very flavor-of-the-week kind of guy. I do not think the UFC is gonna be very keen on McGregor vs Hooker compared to McGregor vs Chandler since we need to make this fight happen. So I'm not really worried about it." Michael Chandler told Ariel Helwani on Monday's Ariel Helwani Show.
Chandler is not wrong the UFC and the fans would like to see McGregor vs Chandler. That story needs to be finished.
Conor McGregor's potential return to the octagon against Dan Hooker presents a significant opportunity for him to re-establish himself as a contender in the lightweight division, especially following Hooker's recent struggles. However, the ongoing interest in a matchup with Michael Chandler complicates the situation, as Chandler emphasizes the importance of their anticipated fight over McGregor's bout with Hooker.
