Who thought of the Miami Turnover Chain?

There are a lot of great traditions in college football. One of them has to be the Miami Turnover Chain. The Hurricanes defense always played like their lives were on the line because of this huge piece of jewelry that was given after big triumphs. However, this tradition ended before the 2022 season. What happened and what were its origins?
The Miami Hurricanes pride themselves with the stellar defense that was always a cut above the rest. However, it was not always this way. So, former defensive coordinator Manny Diaz had a big idea back in 2017. He would give someone in their unit a huge Cuban chain that weighed about five and a half pounds.
After that, the Hurricanes were off to a blazing win streak. They demolished their next ten opponents without dropping a single game. Everyone on the Miami defense wanted to wear the turnover chain and it was evident with how they played.
Unfortunately, good things often come to an end. Coach Mario Cristobal announced that they would no longer use the turnover chain despite its long and storied success: "It is not a shot or form of disrespect to anybody or anyone. Certainly history is history, and whether it’s positive, whether it’s inconsequential, whatever it may be, it’s still history and part of your program. We’re just moving in a direction that right now doesn’t involve it."
The Hurricanes have still found some success in recent years without the turnover chain. But, it does look obvious that their defense is not quite as motivated unlike in previous years.
